State of the Union

I turned 30 yesterday. To celebrate, I went to bed early.

Today, I bought a Wii. I’ve been wanting one for ages, but not so much that I was willing to camp out somewhere or get friendly with a pimply faced game store clerk in order to procure it. When I woke up this morning, however, I thought to myself, “This is my lucky day.” I found one at the first store I visited. Go figure. I haven’t bought any games yet, but I have played several rounds of golf.

I still need to sort through all the news coming out of Anime Expo this weekend, but most of what I’ve heard so far has been positive. The Hayate no Gotoku license is a nice surprise. So is Funimation swooping in and casting Phoenix Down on everything in sight. I’m anxious to hear their plans for finishing out the Kanon release.

The second season of Da Capo II was actually pretty good. More on that later.

Anyway, I’m going to commemorate the birth of this fine nation by getting drunk and watching some Hidamari Sketch. In the immortal words of Thomas Jefferson, “I swear upon the altar of God that Yoshinoya is hot.”

Amen.

    ~happy birthday to you~

The Wii craze is over, so every store has them in stock actually. I can understand why, since Wii is not something most gaming males would find interesting after 10 minutes. And you’re 30! Cheers.

Hidasketch x365 is an incredible show.

You need to go buy No More Heroes. It’s the only reason to own a Wii right now.

Actually, the Wii is still pretty difficult to find here in the States. Today was the first time I actually saw one in person, in a store, EVER. And it’s been out for something like a year and a half now. Perhaps availability is better in Singapore?

I wanted one mostly because I have close friends scattered around the country who are big Wii fans and I was tired of not being able to join them in network games (now, if I could only track down a copy of Mario Kart… that’s impossible to find, too). Also, I wanted to get my hands on one prior to the Harvest Moon release. Video game farming is my secret pleasure.

I’m not a serious gamer and don’t have a lot of free time to spare, so a console that specializes in casual gaming like the Wii is perfect for me. When I want to play something more involved, I can just fire up the old PS2 and devote some time to whatever JRPG I happen to be working on at the moment.

I heard that because of the weak dollar, the American market was a lower priority. That’s why Nintendo routed a larger portion of their supply to Europe and Asia first. Anyway, happy birthday and hope you have fun with your Wii!

Happy Birthday! If you like horror games, Fatal Frame IV (Project Zero IV) is heading to Wii very soon. The first three Fatal Frame were pretty good for survival horror. I’d like to know how different the game would be using Wii’s remote.

just got a message from god:

I am in my heaven, all is right with Yoshinoya.

    happy bday~

Happy Birthday Secret Harvest Moon Lover! (I am not alone!!)
Methinks the Hidamari Sketch x365 is a whole reason to celebrate in itself, but I can’t think of a better way to celebrate a birthday at this time of year than yours (okay, I’d replace getting drunk with lots of cake, but whatever works :P)

Happy birthday. Don’t worry, you’re not nearly as old as some of us….

About the Wii - yeah it’s pretty easy to get here in the UK as well. I think what Kabitzin said was true about the weak dollar, but it’s also because there’s so much more profit to be had from sales here in Europe. In the UK, the Wii console on it’s own costs £179 ($353 US) - which is why I have no intention of buying one.

Happy thirtieth, I think a pissup would be a brilliant way to celebrate.

I’m a little on the fence about the hayate licensing. On the one hand, it’s a good thing for the series in general, but I’m worried about how well it will work given all the references in it, especially if bandai wants to push a dubbed version out. I have nothing against dubs but I would guess there would be many things lost in translation. Funimation has landed just about 90% of the best titles out there, so I’m expecting a lot of delays while they try and push everything out. And I agree the second season of da capo 2 was actually quite good… until the last episode. It just reeked of hackneyed tripe, though I suppose it was a happy ending so I shouldn’t be bitching.

Happy Birthday, JL, and yeah… the Wii is a whole lot more plentiful in Singapore.

    Cheers.

Welcome to your 30s, Jeff. I hope they are great!

Hidamari Sketch x365 is a great birthday present.

  14. 14 Caitlin

Happy birthday! Congrats on finding a Wii too - I hope I get the same luck later this year for a very early Christmas present. I’m looking forward to seeing what Funimation does with Hayate and if they’ll let us purchase it, subtitled only, via download.

Happy birthday. I was going to comment on your getting to bed early, but since I’m 22 and I should be getting a lot more sleep than I do (like right now), I felt like I had no right to do so. :P

I need to grab some Hidamari Sketch x365 as soon as I have the time and fast internet to do so.

  16. 16 Zeroblade

Happy birthday! Also, thanks for reminding me about HSx365 - I must finish watching the first season too though.

  17. 17 Shiro Long Tail

    Happy Birthday!

Also, since you haven’t gotten any Wii titles yet, I will take the chance to recommend Okami and Metroid Prime 3 to you. Oh and Mario & Sonic at the Olympics is a surprisingly fun game (to rent), even more so if you happen to be playing with your hopelessly out of shape friends.

  18. 18 Crusader

    Happy belated birthday!

I humbly suggest you get Super Smash Bros. Brawl or Mario Kart. Even if you don’t have a buddy on hand you can at least play online with other people. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was also pretty good.

Happy b-day Jeff!! Cheers!! Hidamari sketch is a cool way to celebrate!! LOL…

Good to know you are part of Wii gamers now. I still have (and love) my NGC and i think i will change to Wii eventually.

    ^_^

I swear upon the altar of God that the landlady is hot.

Happy birthday, Jeff, and congratulations on obtaining that Wii.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUCKY PERSON!

Now I need to go get a Wii for myself

  22. 22 thenullset

    Happy belated birthday.

We’ve had a Wii for awhile. We got lucky though - walked into a walmart and after not seeing any on the shelf asked someone outside of electronics department if they had any. Person checked inventory and saw the store had 2 so she went back and after 15 minutes came back with one. I still haven’t actually seen any Wiis on the shelve yet.

That’s what I get for not checking your blog every now and again… HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JEFF! Having just gotten out of my 30s a few months ago, I can honestly say that if I had it to do all over again…

    …um…

    …happy birthday, Jeff.

Now that I’ve finished Aria at last, I’m feeling that post-Aria-depression now. Hidamari Sketch is helping, but I need more happiness fast. Hmm, wonder what the best treatment is…

  25. 25 Wonderduck

Maybe a new episode of Aria? Look for ep5.5, you might be surprised what you find…

  26. 26 MJ

5.5 was a nice episode, though I had already watched it between episodes 5 and 6. Shows like Sketchbook and Hidamari Sketch are of a similar slice-of-life ilk, though it’s made me realize how unique a show Aria was in the anime space (~54 episodes later, it’s like parting with a good friend).

I want to see which show Jeff gravitates towards next :-)

How did the “going to bed early” feel?

Should try that for special occasions - haven’t been to bed in the pms since 6th grade.

  28. 28 otou-san

Happy (belated) birthday, and enjoy the Wii. I’m not a huge gamer, and find that I don’t have the time for many involved games, but Mario Kart on occasion really is fun. I hope 30 went well, I’m fast approaching it myself and I’m starting to get the fear.
