Forgive me from saying this, but my wife and I believe that movie is a little overrated. The graphics could have been better and the plot feels bit light.

  2. 2 GreyDuck

It’s not the Best Movie Ever, but it’s certainly worth seeing… which is more than I can say for anything to come out of the American cinema grinding mill in the last few months.

  3. 3 vale

how is that movie called? I’ve wanted to watch this for a long time but I forgot the name…
    thanks!

  4. 4 Lenners

It’s called Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, or The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. The plot may seem especially light to adults, but I think it really hits home for the younger audience :)

  5. 5 Mei

Coming from her generation, I enjoyed the movie a lot. The soundtrack has a few nice pieces, too.

  6. 6 gordon

i enjoyed the movie. i bought the manga a few weeks back. it has a short story on the lady at the art museum.

  7. 7 korosora

    great movie. highly enjoyable.

Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, eh? It was a pleasant watch, but I do agree w/ maglor.

The protagonist is way too conceited/ignorant to be liked, however, and the extraction of her going through the transition of boredom –> delight –> realization of the her own stupidity was quite charmless. I also felt that the characterization of the red-haired esper-boy (what was his name again?) wasn’t brought out to the full potential. I do like, however, her pathetic breakdown toward the end of the movie; it shows how fragile some teenagers can be, although it was kind of stereotypical.

It’s highly enjoyable for me as well, but I doubt I’ll rewatch this anytime soon.

  10. 10 TheBigN

Same sort of concept as this?

    Too bad it’s March 1st now. :3

finally I saw it… and I loved it! And I find it very beautiful. The protagonist is funny but I must say that she got in mi nerves a lot of times…she ended up anoying me and I didn’t liked the end because you are expecting something more and then…it’s over (at least that happened to me). not the best movie ever, it has it’s flaws, is true but I don’t think this should stop enyone from enjoying it.
ps: I see you deleted one of my post before… sorry for that! my pc started doing weird things and posted twice.

Great minds think alike, TheBigN. Well, that, and I needed to post something (anything!) lest you guys think I got lost on the way to Rio de Janeiro or something.

On the subject of the movie, it’s been nearly a year since I last watched it… I should find the time to rewatch it soon. I’m quite fond of it.

  13. 13 snobaste

I actually was just downloading this :P Looks promising, but I’ll have to wait until I watch it to find out.

Toki wo kakeru shoujo is definitely one of my favourite anime of all time. It is the article “Two Feet, Firmly Planted” from this blog that provoked me to do some research on this so-called “as much value as two Ghibli films combined” cinema.(Yes, I am a die-hard Ghibli fan; however, I am not too fond of its recent works.) Moreover, it is that very same article which made me favoured this blog. True, I do concur that the plot may seems rather juvenile for mature audiences; especially when it is compared to Byousoku 5 Centimeter. However, it is that very quality which makes me have better opinion of it than Byousoku 5 Centimeter. To me, anime is an escape from reality. If I really want something heavy so I can have something to cry about(Yes, I really do want cry after I watched Byousoku 5 Centimeter), I would read novels instead. That being said, it doesn’t mean everyone regards the values of anime the same way as I do. However, this film is definitely a must-see regardless of what you think about anime in general.

Shouldn’t that be *we might have thought you ended up in Rio de Janerio while driving to work in the morning?* Isumi gets seriously lost in just the distance to school, so heaven knows where she would end up if she purposely aimed for Rio!

I just watched and I must say it was a good one. I did not know it was one year old.. The feeling it gives off at the end resembles as what I had with Byousoku 5cm. As Mackciuq says in the above, I also had to weep at Byousoku which brings us back to the beginning how I found this blog at all(which was a Byousoku post, not the weeping). Also as Mackciuq (hard to keep typing that) anime is an escape of reality for me too.

I have a friend who calls every anime ‘Hentai’ (blasphemy, don’t ask why he is still my friend) And I think I ought to let him see this one this movie was rather hearth warming and made me feel a bit happy.

Now I hope that there is more to come in the likes of this. Makoto Shinkai Rules!

It’s pretty good, again, as several other posters have mentioned, it seems to receive great press but isn’t actually that good.

The animation is very “flat” and even some TV shows tend to have more depth to their animation. Whether this was because of budget restraints or what, I don’t know, but it is noticeable. The story also takes more than it’s fair helping out of GROUNDHOG DAY (yes, one of Mr. Murray’s best movies) until it tries to explain the time leaping, which is where it starts to fall apart for me.

Out of 10? No more than a 7, and that’s being kind.

  18. 18 The Sojourner

Argh. Do I have to kill my brain cells to understand every single post that is relatively ambiguous to me? =p

    Just jokin sir…

  19. 19 Ipsod

I liked the movie a lot. I could have been lucky that I heard no hype for it before I watched it, because I have a two friends that complained to me that Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo was over hyped.

It is an enjoyable movie despite it not being original in story concept.

Jumping on leapday is a fad.

    One I embrace :3

And please, please please do yourself a favor and watch it on 35mm. It’s designed for it. At least get yourself a big wide screen TV or monitor if you have to pirate it. Surround sound if possible.

  21. 21 Jeff Lawson

I’ve earmarked that sort of money for more important things. And with the economy all wonky, I’d be reluctant to spend it on a luxury item like an HDTV, anyway. Hell, I felt guilty for ordering a pizza the other day.

  22. 22 cornpopsicle

I definitely did enjoy the movie, but I admit I did not necessarily feel it to be exactly, monumental, so to speak. I didn’t hear much hype about it, since I was having an anime drought for quite a while. It could be just my jaded feelings with regards for most animes.

  23. 23 omo

I never said you have to buy anything besides maybe a ticket to a movie showing. Lonely otaku are expense-ridden ones. Communal ones enjoy not only community, but shared resources.

But if you are going to critically jab at a film (and I direct this to everyone) it will help to preface how you are watching it. It makes a big difference on how much you may enjoy something.

  24. 24 Jeff Lawson

Well, I didn’t critically jab at the movie, but I understand that you’re speaking to a wider audience here. I actually kind of agree with your point; when I stopped watching fansubs on a computer monitor and started watching them on a television (and stopped screwing around with taking screenshots), my enjoyment in the activity increased tenfold. When someone suggested in a comment to a recent post that I treat myself by buying a good computer monitor and some good headphones with which to watch anime, I thought, “why on earth would I do that?” It’d be a step backwards. That, and I already have a good monitor and good headphones.

Now, if I had the option to catch the movie in the theater, I would. Catching it in a more casual setting with a group of anime fans would be the more viable option, of course, but my experience with anime clubs and the like has never been all that positive; I can only tolerate so much MSTing, especially when its directed toward something of honest to goodness quality.

  25. 25 omo

Well, I put down people who don’t know when to stop MST… [/flex] Personally I have anime watching friends, I just rarely watch stuff with them because we live far enough to make regular meetings a hassle. Instead meeting up for a film screening at a central location (cities) is the more common way we share the experience.

But there’s a cost associated with that, and living near cities that are any good :D

  26. 26 Jasper Arts

    Few Questions:
1-How do I get my anime on a tv? it’s kindof hard to buy on DVD and the amount is very limited.
    2-What is MSTing?
3-I havenever seen an anime in a movie theater, I wouldn’t know anyone at this moment to come along but I sure as hellw ould go since.. Big screen big sound, even Freud would just come for the Bigness alone. Why aren’t there any anime in theaters more often (I bet I know this answer)
4-What ís the best way to watch anime, and how many ways are there to watch it? (I currently use a monitor, big fat one, no TFT)
5-How do you people watch your stuff? And why is it that you watch it that way? do you have experience with watching it on any other medium?

I’ll be looking forward to any answer, thanks in advance.

    PS
6?This might be an idea for a poll? Or a post? I would like to see more info on this imo, do you too?

  27. 27 Jeff Lawson

That might be a worthwhile topic for an actual post, Jasper Arts. Let me think about it.

To answer to your “what is MSTing,” question, however, see here.

  28. 28 TheBigN

I guess I was lucky at my college anime club, since MSTing was frowned upon and done only after the showing was over.

We did see Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo at an informal showing in an auditorium, so that was pretty fun. Granted, it was from someone’s fansub (hence the “informal”), so I’m not sure about how much quality was there. :P

I should go out more for film screenings. Living in the DC metropolitan area, it seems like a great area to have those screenings, though probably not at the Kennedy Center Family Theater. :P

I personally loved this movie and plan to buy it if it comes out in America. Call me a romantic…

  30. 30 Spyhunter

I thought it was a fun and touching movie. Not the best movie out there, but worth watching. Better than most animated films that are made in the West.

  31. 31 hashihime

Maybe it’s because I read the novella, which had a rather different and more interesting story; and maybe it’s because I thought Byousoku 5cm was a masterpiece and couldn’t understand how people could rate this show higher, but this movie disappointed me. I couldn’t sympathize with the heroine, whose voice seemed ugly and blaring to me and whose emotions seemed shallow. And the leaping was kind of silly, I thought. And none of the other characters seemed to get any development. And the over-animated scenes in the schoolyard made it look like a plate of maggots. But other than that, it was nice, lol. I appreciate anything that can spread enjoyment of anime. I’m sure it’s largely that I personally just wasn’t able to feel her feelings.

  32. 32 Daniel

What people might actually like about it, is that it’s despite the time leaping, it is very down to earth otherwise. The simple, yet very decent, animation style emphasizes this. It’s also refreshing that the character designs does not involve overly beautiful characters which are almost ubiquitous in anime. It’s probably not a good idea to lump it together with anime TV series because animated movies (not OVAs or specials called “movies”) are usually different as they are made for a wider audience than many series which try to cater certain otaku niches and make excessive use of established cliches. Maybe that makes it exceptional for some but somewhat simple and generic for those with a different perspective on anime.
