Happy Tanabata to all! I had planned on decorating a bamboo plant for the occasion, but… well, this ain’t bamboo country. Every salesperson at every nursery I visited pointed me toward this plant, which isn’t even bamboo in the first place.
So, I hung some paper cranes, instead.
When I was in Japan, there were quite a few people who followed my day to day activities. Thus, the company received a lot of letters and gifts on my behalf, all of which were presented to me at my going away party the night before I returned to the United States. I had already known about the letters, as one of my producers had a habit of teasing me by sharing some of the juicier ones with the rest of the office (I was popular with lonely housewives… use your imagination), but I didn’t know about the thousands of paper cranes that had been mailed in from all over the country. I was impressed not only by the sheer quantity, but also by the amount of effort that must’ve gone into folding each and every one.
They’ve been boxed up and stored away ever since, however, so it’s nice to take them out to admire once again. Perhaps I should find a permanent place for them.

After that amazing video on the Newtype website last night, I’d have to agree that yesterday was a very happy Tanabata indeed.
It still doesn’t amount to a confirmation of Haruhi season 2, though. But I don’t see any other way of interpreting it - and the Tanabata story of the Suzumiya Haruhi series is a logical starting point for any second season.
Damn, I was hoping Jeff can get away with a rant about tanabata without the h word.
What a tease.
Best I can tell, this whole Haruhi business is much ado about nothing. I don’t want to piss on anyone’s parade, though, so I’m keeping my mouth shut.
zomg where did you find this image….do you by any chance have a large version of it :X
I suppose you could take the My-HiME approach and tie your wish to a railing in the rotunda of an exclusive academy. Probably have to look around Boulder for one that would accomodate you, though….
I ended up buying my bamboo by mail order (it turns out that there’s a nice bamboo mail-order place here in Massachusetts, which made it easier to believe that it would grow in this clime).
I’m using it as a house plant (office plant, actually). It’s both invasive and non-native, so I don’t want to plant it outside. It took me a couple of years to get tanabata-worthy plants, however.
GAT-X207, I do have a larger version… or, rather, I DID have a larger version, as I accidentally saved over the original after resizing it for the blog. I’ve had the image for so long now that I couldn’t tell you where I originally found it. It’s promotional art for the Bottle Fairy franchise, in case you want to go searching for it.
And dm… I guess I have a year to find one before the next Tanabata. I’d be using it as a houseplant as well. Despite it’s supposed hardiness, I don’t think I’d want to subject it to a long Colorado winter.
