This news is already a few days old, but I just wanted to mention that the recent announcement of a third season of You’re Under Arrest really caught me by surprise. Even to this day, You’re Under Arrest is one of only a few shows that I can rewatch time and time again and yet never grow tired of. The series is representative of a certain era of anime that, in my opinion, ended far too soon. So, you can’t imagine how happy I am to hear that more is on the way.
I do wonder about the content of the new season, however. Will it pick up where the second season left off? Or will it jump forward into the future? Like most of Fujishima Kosuke’s creations, You’re Under Arrest has quite the gadgetry fetish. In fact, one of the most charming things about the series is how it depicts the emerging technology of the 1990s. I can’t tell you how much of a kick I got out of watching Miyuki go all wobbly at the sight of a 200 MHz PC workstation at one point during the first season, for example. Pure nostalgia, it is.
So, I have to ask: will the third season bring You’re Under Arrest into the 21st century?

I hope it’s good-definitely has potential.
I often rewatch the silly mini-special DVD- the sign of a good anime. It is quite nostalgic seeing some of the last of the cel-based animation-it had such a unique look.
I hated the Live Action version of this series, Natsumi lost all of her character there. I share the same hopes as you do, Jeff. Probably they’ll be dealing with cyber criminals or something :p
However, more than anything, I wanna see some progress in the Ken X Miyuki relationship. The tease is too much :D
Well, they WERE engaged by the end of the second season.
You’re Under Arrest 2nd season was my first subtitled anime, and to see another series being made makes me feel warm and nostalgic all over. Definitely looking forward to this.
Engaged? No they weren’t. At the end of the second season Ken wanted to give Miyuki the ring, but its slipped off his hand fell off a cliff. Sure she gave him a kiss [or was it a peck] for his efforts but it didn’t clearly state any engagement - or an established relationship, even. All she said was “I’ll for you, okay?”, right?
Unless there’s another episode after Ep 26, that is.
I’m stunned! This was one of the first anime series I got into. I still have the Kodansha “File-X” art book on my shelf (which I’ll no doubt be looking at shortly.) 10 years later… WOW! Good news indeed!
You’re correct, Silencers… I forgot about him dropping the ring. It’s been awhile since I last rewatched the second season.
Damn, you made me read the manga spoilers XD
If the third season brings You’re Under Arrest into the 21st century? I think they’ll catch up with the new times but I hope, somehow, that some things remain “old-school”. That’s a thing I always liked about the series and the movie.
The basics remind me a litte bit of Indiana Jones who will always battle his way through the 50s no matter what will come. That stoic staying on a certain time is what makes the movie a classic.
I keep half-expecting the sun to explode after hearing about a 3rd season, I didn’t think we’d ever see more. I wonder if after two seasons, the movie, and the mini-specials if they’re out of manga material by now and will have to come up with original stories. Nakajima has such bad luck, especially with the ring…although part of me thinks the White Hawk of Bokutou is just too gutless and Miyuki deserves better.
I still feel that the art of the original OVA captured Fujishima Kosuke’s style the best, and it remains my favorite in that sense. The first season’s art was naturally low quality due to the long series length, but I wasn’t a big fan of the contemporary look of the 2nd season characters, even though the quality was better. They just seemed more…generic? I think it has a lot to do with the eye shape modifications and and spacing - the original designs had smaller eyes that were spaced a bit farther apart. I certainly hope that the 3rd season returns the art to classic form, since part of YUA’s appeal (for me at least) was the signature Kosuke character designs.
