In case you haven’t heard the news yet, Simoun has been licensed for North American release by Media Blasters. For those of you just dropping in, Simoun was my favorite show of the past year.
I can’t say I’m all that surprised, seeing as I’ve suspected the show would be licensed eventually, if not within the year. Also, rumors of the show’s licensing have been floating around for a couple of months now.
Still, even if I’m not surprised by the announcement, I’m happy as can be. So, if you will allow…
MEDIA BLASTERS BANZAI! JOHN SIRABELLA BANZAI! SIMOUN BANZAI!

I’m surprised. I was surprised. I still will be surprised.
Media Blasters always license my guilty pleasures, it seems. Even if it doesn’t involve porn.
Awesome :)
Yuri mecha pilots banzai!
That’s cool although I still have yet to see it.
Did they license the wheels that came off the show around halfway thru, too?
I never got around to watching this one, but now I can look forward to the NA release.
Hooray for bringing Good Girls to the States. :3
Did they license the wheels that came off the show around halfway thru, too?
Huh? Were we watching the same show? “Around halfway thru” is some of the best material in the whole series, particularly the 14-15-16 three-parter.
Needless to say, I’m thrilled. And I suspect that you and Erica both picking the series as the best of the year had something to do with it being licensed.
I’m especially excited that Media Blasters seem like they really care about doing a good job with this, and there’s an awfully good chance that their subtitles will be at least as good as our fansub, if not better.
*shrug* What, people aren’t allowed to dislike shows now? If you’re part of the fansub team, then allow me to thank you for your efforts, but Simoun just didn’t work for me.
And, yes, I’m pretty sure we watched the same show, Futaba. Not much out there like Simoun.
So… haruhi, Simoun… is host club next (i hope!)
Now you have me wondering, Jeff. Any helical motors involved in your new job?
This anime sounds cool, especially if you rated it as one of the top one’s around from last year. However living in the UK I will never see this anime. It’s the unfortunate reality I have come to face. No-one will make the DVD’s into Region 2, and I can’t import from the U.S.A because the customs and imports office here in the UK charges an almighty 40% on anything that is technological (that includes DVDs) imported from the States. Unless i’m prepared to pay £16.99 ($30) + 40% (let’s call it $43) for one volume (3 episodes over here) then I won’t be watching it. So “Banzai” for the American viewers, but i’ll have to settle with anything that has been written about the anime and its episodes from bloggers sites!
Jon,
I’ve imported lots of stuff from the US, usually buying from amazon.com. I’m talking dozens of DVDs over the last few years, including many Anime DVDs of series which have not been released in the UK.
Occasionally, I do get stung by customs and have to go pay the extra fee. But this happens very rarely. In the last ten or so DVDs bought from the States, I’ve only been clobbered with customs charges on one of them.
Large orders are more likely to get picked up, where the odd DVD here or there will most likely get through without encountering a customs charge.
On top of that, with current exchange rates, even when you’ve paid a customs charge the DVD has still cost less than the equivalent DVD would cost if it was available over here.
So I fully intend to import Simoun DVDs as and when they’re released!
(Now, ordering stuff from Japan, that’s a different matter, practically everything I’ve ever ordered from Japan has been hit with a customs charge!)
I watched the English subed and I must say it is awesome. I can’t wait for the North American release.
