Idol Master GO!

This may surprise you, but… well, I’m just as surprised, too: Idol Master XENOGLOSSIA is my favorite show of the new season.

Something just clicked. And, of all the shows premiering this season, this is NOT the one I expected to click. Weird.

    yup, definitely the penguins :)

  4. 4 maglor

I think it is combination of the flying penguin and return of Siesta

  5. 5 Katsudesu

man, whoever thought up to finally put penguins into anime.. i salute you! Penguins are awesome! put a girl in a penguin outfit, even better! I hope this series turns out well…

I love this anime. Haruka is so cute.

  7. 7 GreyDuck

    Well, that was unexpected.

Mecha!!!! Good mecha, lots of mecha bwa ha hah ha ha!

NO… Any good mechas so far?

  10. 10 DiGiKerot

    I’d probably have agreed if it wasn’t for the fact that I fully expected to enjoy this more than any other show this season regardless of how it actually turned out ^^;

Errrr, I take it you’ve not seen Evangelion then? Although I suppose there is still debate raging as to whether Pen-Pen is actually God rather than the penguin them claim him to be…

    Return of Siesta?

    Time to download~ :3

Normally I avoid mecha series like I avoid sticking my face in a fan, but this has been a surprise for me too, I’m enjoying this so far. I didn’t like Mai Hime/Otome so I was expecting this would meet the same fate, but so far it’s got me hooked. If nothing else, I want to find out what happened to the moon…

  13. 13 omo

    Jal’s on crack.

  14. 14 Jeff Lawson

Well, I did enjoy Mai-HiME and Mai-Otome, so I’m not exactly immune to the formula. If Idol Master follows a similar course (i.e., imperfect, but fun to watch), that’s great. However, the show has already grabbed me in a way that Mai-HiME and Mai-Otome never managed, and because of that, I’m intrigued. I never would have considered referring to either of those two shows with the word “favorite”… so, yeah, Sunrise must have found my weak spot or something.

    DiGiKerot

I did see Evangelion, but did not like it, people annoy me when we get into the debate on the significance and meanings in evangelion.. and i did not enjoy it as a show, the arguments were just like debates about shakespere’s works and meanings of poetry and such… if this doesn’t make sense, oh well.. sentence structure breaks down when nearing the end of a day… barely have enough grammar as it is..

  16. 16 phossil

Every idol anime serie ROCKS!!! It looks very lovely to see cute girls in anime… what a weak spot… ^_^

  17. 17 Kaioshin_Sama

Well let’s just hope your not some sort of mecha hater because sooner or later Haruka is going to be getting her own Idol as well as Iori most likely. From reading your past blog posts I can almost guarantee you are the type that is knee-deep into Moe antics and let me tell you Jeff, it may be that way for a while, but this isn’t that type of series overall, trust me. If you’ve ever seen (who am I kidding here) any of the Brave Saga, my radar tells me its going to be a lot like that, only with cute girls instead of Manly man playing the Braves.

Also people who avoid Mecha shows because they feel that only shows with Moe girls and overwrought comedy can be good are liable to miss out on some truly great experiences. Just a word of warning to those who would pass up the likes of Escaflowne, Legend of The Galactic Heroes, Code Geass or Eureka 7 at the face value of Sci-Fi or Fantasy Mecha.

  18. 18 Jeff Lawson

I seriously doubt it’ll ever become that serious of a mecha show. Basically, I’m expecting a Mai-HiME reprise + mecha, and that doesn’t scare me away at all. My tastes aren’t as one-dimensional as you seem to think.

I don’t appreciate the tone of your comment, either.

  19. 19 Kaioshin_Sama

You’ve yet to prove otherwise before now though, that’s the thing. You rail at a show such as NHK, which targets the Moe genre as unproductive and also highlights the Hikkikomori lifestyle as unproductive and you counter this with Comic Party because its a more warm and fuzzy version of the Otaku Lifestyle, because thats a completely realistic interpretation right there. (And I could almost swear you resent the fact the lead is a male). I will agree that Genshiken is the best of the three though in terms of overall fun to be had watching it.

In your Lost Their Music post on Utawarerumono you say its jumped the shark just because its added Mecha, proving you are a mecha hater to some extent. If you had provided a reason as to why to why the mecha ruined the show I would be far more sympathetic, but as it stands I’d have to label you with that title as others have done in the past.

I understand you don’t like the tone, but let’s face it, you are one of the more one sided bloggers around if not the all time champ when it comes to Moe=Auto-Good, Mecha=Auto-Terrible, Everything Else=Depends on whether its good.

Let me see what else I can find:

Your top ten of 2006 list kind of speaks for itself.

Ok let me try to soften the blow here. I appreciate that among the bloggers you are level-headed and clear on what you like and don’t like about shows (even if it is fairly evident already), you provide reasons.

That said I am still very glad you’ve found a series with mecha in it, but I’m also worried you will be unfair to the show once the action starts and its shown not to ground combat like Mai Hime, but instead mecha combat like Brave Saga. Also just between you and me I was a little upset and tired last night so a lot of the stuff I said came out wrong.

  20. 20 Jeff Lawson

You’re making an awful lot of assumptions. Incorrect assumptions, at that. I’m really not all that interested in hearing YOUR opinion of what my tastes and preferences are, or why I like I like or dislike a show. I think I’ve got that handled.

  21. 21 Kaioshin_Sama

Well it kind of works both ways. I listen to your opinion on something I happen to like, that being mecha, and I don’t think its a fair representation of the genre, but I listen and argue it. I think there’s a duty of fairness to take people who make comments opinion’s in to some consideration as well. The like and dislike thing I feel I went overboard on and I apologize for that, but I won’t apologize for calling you on a bias against mecha and pro Moe slant in your blog posts.

  22. 22 Jeff Lawson

I never write about mecha, though. Searching through my archives, the word has only appeared twice on this blog. OK, three times, to be exact. I repeated it twice in the same sentence in that Utawarerumono post you mentioned.

So, when and where have I been stating my opinion on mecha? In the Utawarerumono post? Sorry, but my problems with Utawarerumono extended well beyond the mecha. Try reading the second sentence in this comment. My opinion on the matter is pretty cut and dry.

And I don’t seem to remember mentioning mecha in THIS post, either. You’re the one who brought it up. Then, you proceeded to make assumptions as to my reaction to some sort of unlikely hypothetical. I seriously doubt Idol Master Xenoglossia is going to end up in hardcore mecha territory, but even if it does, who are you to say how I’ll react? How presumptuous can you get?

How exactly am I supposed to respond to something I never said? How am I supposed to defend opinions I don’t actually hold? It seems YOU’RE the person with the bias here, not me.

  23. 23 Kaioshin_Sama

Wow you get bitched at a lot don’t you. That being said I’m not entirely sure I hold a bias on this matter here, I’ve just seen far to many mecha haters on blogs all over the internet and the post pretty much points to it being the JTS moment for you. Why its that and not what you argue to be the bad scripting and poor episodes leading up to this point I’m not sure. Your giving this show a chance does tend to prove otherwise a bit, but no I’m not sure how you’ll react if the show does get to Mecha-centric. Odds are you don’t have much experience with it and people without experience with mecha 9 times out of 10 react like its something horrible, taking away precious time from cute girls and such. I’ll give you a bit more credit than that for the time being and back off out of courtesy (and that and you’ve already taken a lot of flak on this subject before, so I can sympathize), but if you make frequent entries on the series, odds are I’ll pop in and add my two cents on the matter. Just try to keep an open mind on the mecha aspect of the series please.

  24. 24 Jeff Lawson

Fine. And I’ll ask that you try to keep an open mind and show a little more respect when dealing with fans who may or may not have the same tastes as you. The next person might not be so forgiving of your bullshit.

  25. 25 omo

I think there’s a lot of projection going on. The way I read Kaioshin is that he’s pigenonhole-ing Jeff’s position on certain genres along the line with possibly common views and criticisms coming from “other people with similar tastes.”

Obviously it’s sort of presumptuous, but Jeff is, admittedly, less than clear cut about his tastes, too. Not that there’s a reason why that should be either way, but if we think of Jeff as a non-human being and infer, Kaioshin may not be far off the mark. Who knows how well Idolmaster turns out? I’m not going to stick around to find out, so let us know Jeff ;)

    Kaioshin_Sama April 13, 2007 at 9:34 pm

Well it kind of works both ways.

Well, actually, it kind of doesn’t. It’s Jeff’s blog; it’s not your comment section, Kaioshin. I’d say that if you really want to rip someone for their tastes or dislikes, you should probably do it on your blog.

    Just a thought, YMMV.

  27. 27 Wonderduck

Oh, and I dug the first episode of the show, too.

  28. 28 Jeff Lawson

Thanks for the comments, guys, but Kaioshin_Sama and I have worked things out in private. Since we both agreed to drop the subject, I ask that you not reopen it.

    Oh, and Omo… it is a mystery~~~

  29. 29 GreyDuck

It’s all your fault, Jeff: I downloaded this show, when ordinarily I’d have given it a complete pass by. Now I’m actually looking forward to future installments… at least for now. My current “hit list” consists of Idol Master, sola, RxJ (assuming it doesn’t go further downhill), Darker than Black and possibly Kaze no Stigma.

This may be the fullest anime season for me in years. I suppose the timing is right since I’m also trying to revive the old ABM forums. Plenty of posting fodder, baby.
