Sawatari Makoto School of Design

Whenever I see pictures like this, I kind of laugh, because I actually have an entire room that’s devoted exclusively to the storing and viewing of anime… and it’s so damn boring.

I suppose I should get a plant or something. How about a lava lamp?

That’s a very neat and tidy room, and I like how your shelf is very organised.

Your room is perfectly fine to me. But I guess putting in a plant would not be advised, the lava lamp is a good idea though :).

This is a damn small screen, but the room is NICE. It looks like my ideal room, but alas I live like a pig in a den.

I have fantasies of having a room as spacious as that. Unfortunately, that is what they remain. Fantasies. ^^; My room is by no means messy, but it is… cramped.

    Le sigh.

All I can say is, I don’t know if I’m glad or disappointed that I don’t have as much anime as you do… :P

I should point out that I shot the photos with a super wide-angle lens (10mm), so the room looks a LOT larger than it actually is (and the TV looks tiny). In reality, it’s only about 120 square feet.

Then again, my ENTIRE apartment in Tokyo was 120 square feet, so perhaps it’s spacious after all…

    That room is a 120 square feet? My room is a 100 square feet( 10ft x 10ft). ^^; Of course… with a bed, a wardrobe, 2 cupboards, plus chair, desk, etc… and there ain’t exactly a lot of feet-space left. ^^;

Not to mention that I have to keep all my model kits( over a hundred of them), CDs, DVDs, model-kit tools, paint and stuff, books, spare PC parts, misc toys from yesteryears, etc…

    I personally think it is a miracle I managed to cram so much into my room without it being messy. ^^;

    Woah Hey! :D

It may be boring, but surely your room is the cleanest one I’ve seen.

    It looks so…professional.

im quite impressed by the minimalist look of your room. the location of the painting, in particular… most ppl would hang it in the middle relative to the sofa, but having it on the left just adds that subtle design flair. i guess i shouldn’t be surprised considering the clean layout of your site…!

I think my apartment when I was single was even more empty–and if minimalist is good enough for Sawatari Mikuru’s place, I figure it can’t be a bad thing.

Since you’re already minimal & a neatfreak (no offense, so am I), why not borrow Sawatari Makoto’s design sense and do it all in whites with white throw rug? The ideal room in which to revive snowbound travellers -

  12. 12 Chami

I think you could do with a larger piece beside that carp/koi/whatever one you have over your sofa. Having such a big gap between that and the two framed animation cels (at least that’s what I assume they are) besides the window just makes me feel like something’s missing.

Now if only I could keep my room as clean as that…

  13. 13 Jeff Lawson

    They’re shitajiki, Chami.

That wall was entirely bare for the longest time… which is unusual, as I can’t stand bare walls. I actually bought the painting for a different room, but didn’t care for the way it looked. So, it was collecting dust until recently. I haven’t decided what to do with the gap as of yet.

Jaalin is awfully perceptive, though… the placement of the painting in relation to the sofa is very much intentional.

I think I can barely make up the contents of the pictures on the wall. I’ll hazard a guess though. The picture on the lower right hand side is from Comic Party. The one on the lower left hand side looks like Miu from Piano. The one on the upper left hand side looks like Sakura from Card Captor Sakura. I can’t really tell the one on the upper right hand side.

You should post a close up picture of your collection so we can see clearly what you’ve got. I can barely recognize Ai Yori Aoshi, Angelic Layer and Kita He at the top.

  15. 15 Jeff Lawson

Here you go, Mohammad. Sorry about the flash.

Good job identifying the shitajiki on the wall… the mystery one is Kanon.

Thanks. Quite an impressive collection and you have a mixture of region 1 and region 2 DVDs as I can see. They’re also arranged alphabetically. I’m glad to see that Haibane Renmei boxset has its own spot with the front cover facing outward. I’m also surprised that many of the DVDs and boxsets have their front cover facing outwards but we only see the side of both Maison Ikkoku boxsets. I was expecting them to be at the very top of the collection or at least facing outwards.

Cool!!!… but damn boring?? No way!!
You have a great anime collection, and my room kinda looks like yours….

    ^_^

The Maison Ikkoku boxes aren’t all that worthy of display, in my opinion… they’re not artboxes in the traditional sense. Also, when I get around to purchasing the remaining six boxes (perhaps I should do that soon, lest they go out of print), I’ll be forced to display them side out, as the alternative would take up a little more than a full row of shelves. Eventually, I’ll have to start turning some of those other boxes around, too.

The prominence of the Haibane Renmei box is kind of funny, as I don’t care for the show all that much. It’s a pretty box, though. Same with Gasaraki.

what is a good English website to purchase anime dvds, osts, memorabilia, etc?

  20. 20 Jeff Lawson

Most of my memorabilia and character goods, I bought in Tokyo (or received as part of a promotion). For R1 DVDs, I like Deep Discount DVD and Right Stuf.

  21. 21 phossil

Well i have used Akadot Retail and AnimeNation, and someday i will get it in Tokyo like you Jeff…

    :D

I think you should save the money that would be used to buy a lava lamp/plant/any other form of decoration, and buy yourself a bigger tv. Besides, in the end, you’ll be looking at that far more than any ol’ plant (unless it’s one of those really neat venus fly trap thingies).

  23. 23 Jeff Lawson

I really don’t need a larger TV, though… 25″ is plenty big for that room (like I said, the photo makes the TV look smaller than it actually is), and if I were to upgrade, I’d have to go the HD route. I really have no use for an HD set at this point in time.

Plus, I really like that TV. It’s about as good as SD CRTs get, and it’s perfect for anime.

I think I have that exact same shelf! But mine has a bunch of video games and cds too. I actually need to get another one of those due to all the manga and DVDs I’ve recently acquired.

Also, my room is about 100% messier than yours.
