AMV Week: Worlds Apart (Catholic Schoolgirls in Trouble)
February 15, 2007 | Otaku, Eye Candy | Marimite
When I first cooked up the idea of “AMV Week”, I really did intend to finish in a week’s time. Six videos in six days. On the seventh day, I rest. Easy enough, right?
Yeah, right.
Anyway, even though it took half a year, I’m happy to present the final video in this series…
Worlds Apart (Catholic Schoolgirls in Trouble) (43 MB XviD AVI)
Honestly, there’s no point in sharing the full story behind this video. In short, it’s little more than a simple joke video that developed a life all its own the longer I worked on it. Someone once described it as follows…
There is simply not enough action in Marimite for the Journey song to fit in well, and it’s not funny enough to be an effective gag video - especially as long as it is. There’s just not enough humor for it to really pay off, and it simply ends up looking more like an overwrought drama video than the parody it is supposed to be.
I’ll take that as a compliment.
Oh, and since I’m on the subject of Maria-sama ga Miteru, I want to say that the new OAV series has me falling in love with the show all over again.

Same for me, watching the new OVA series made me remember how much I love this show.
As a closet Journey and Marimite fan, I fully approve.
What does Rosa Gigantea say to Yumi at the end? Is there a fansub?
Basically, Sei invites Yumi to her friend’s place so she get out of the rain and dry off. I always intended to go back and add subtitles to that scene, but never got around to it. There’s a typo in the title card that needs fixing, too.
Does the picture refer to some historic painting?
Yes, although I’m having a difficult time recalling the title and artist.
I’ve been wracking my brain, trying to remember what event the painting depicted, hoping it would jog my memory… it’s awfully reminiscent of the events of John 2:13-25 in the New Testament, but I think that’s just a coincidence, as any research I do along those lines leaves me coming up empty. Otherwise, based on the general “feel” of this version, it looks like the original might have been done in the Baroque style.
Any art history buffs out there have the answer?
Hey, Jeff:
I very much enjoyed the wonderful video. Except for the somehow abrupt transition of bg music in the beginning, the whole thing works great!
Thank you very much!!

It’s a parody of one of those french revolution paintings, though can’t for the life of me recall the name or artist for the real one. I know it was on the cover of my old-old Jr. High History book, at the very least ;).
And yeah, the Marimite OVA is indeed full of love. The double-length format fits the series as tad better IMO, as it keeps the leisury story better flowing & structured. Though even then, it becomes a “huh, wait, you mean that was 50 minutes already? No way!” when you finish the thing :).
Also, that face Yumi has in the last image is just too precious. Always nice to get new viewing angles into the personality of your siblings :p.
Ah… “Liberty Leading the People”, by Eugène Delacroix. Here’s the original.
What’s odd is that, after exhausting all potential biblical events, the French Revolution was the second thing I looked into. How I didn’t stumble upon it, I don’t know. Thanks for getting me back on track, Muey.
And, yeah… when I first watched the first OAV episode, I didn’t realize it was 50 minutes in length. After about a half hour, I started wondering what what going on and checked the run time… I just about danced a little jig. The longer run time really does suit the show better, and with six OAV episodes planned, it’s like getting another 13 episode season.
I always liked this video.
The new OVA series had me tickled pink the entire time. Regarding the length, I saw that the first episode was 50 minutes when I started watching it, but it honestly felt like it was over in half an hour. I wanted to keep watching it, which for me with no attention span anymore watching shows I wish were over in 15 minutes, struck me as meaning something. Can’t wait for the rest of it.
So much drama in the atmosphere, which Journey greatly helps with. :P
Reminds me that I need to go watch the show sooner of later, as it seems like something that would interest me. Possibly sooner.
I love the song in this AMV. ^^;
Cheers.
I really liked the song too… but the anime… meh… I didn’t much like it… could you put the origional song here? Please… I feel inspired to write…
Mary cannot save you now… May the rosary be with you… feel the power of the heretic side… together we will make the Lutheran Church!
I have no Idea where those came from… just felt like writing them… Non-dnomination churches FTW!!!!! (heh heh Catholic nubs…)
I remember this joke from the show Prairie Home Companions Radio Show.
He thought that Satan made the Catholic Church, and in spare times made the Lutheran Church.
