2. Kanon
Do you know how much snow has fallen in Denver since I left town a few weeks ago? A lot. Around three feet, in fact. The place must be crawling with sad girls right now.
So, while watching the most recent episode of Kanon, I experienced something unexpected: pangs of homesickness. I longed for the the chill of a cold winter day. The sound of snow crunching under my feet. Treetops glistening. Sleigh bells ringing. You know the drill.
But, at the same time, Kanon has been therapeutic - not only as a connection to home, but as a connection to the past. After all, this isn’t my first Kanon “experience”. And when I look back on my first experience, I see an anime fan on the brink. Sure, I was already head over heels in love with this stuff at the time, but you see… well, it was around that time I first realized I wasn’t merely an anime fan, but an anime nut. Whether I should look back upon that moment with delight or horror, I honestly can’t say.
Hence, you could say Kanon is an exercise in nostalgia for me. For a lot of people, however, it’s something entirely new. I’m actually a bit envious. Kyoto Animation has done a fantastic job with the show thus far - so fantastic that I wish I was experiencing the magic of Kanon again for the very first time. You Kanon virgins are lucky folks.
Then again, I suppose us Kanon veterans are pretty lucky, too.

Yeah Kanon is amazing, i’m a kanon virgin and kyoto popped my kanon cherry, and i’m lovin it.
Now that I think about it…it probably was around my Kanon viewing time that I figured out I was an anime nut too. heh, funny how Kanon works. Nayuki ftw~
hmm…and could number one possibly be yet another Kyoto Animation production?
As a Kanon vet I must say that I am loving every episode of the new series. I went back and watched a handful of episodes from the original series and really realized just how good KyoAni’s version has been thus far.
I’ll cough a lung if No.1 is Lovely Idol.
All the anime that I figured JL would list have been listed already.
*stands-by*
Yep, KyoAni’s version of Kanon is enjoyable for veterans and virgins, it’s just wonderfully done. I’m loving sleepy Nayuki, and Sayuri needs more screentime!
>>Yeah Kanon is amazing, i’m a kanon virgin and kyoto popped my kanon cherry, and i’m lovin it.
This line sounds sooo wrong in so many ways….. >_>;;;
This rendition is my first experience with the story, and I’m delighted so far. (I’m also doing my best to steer clear of spoilers.) The only thing that could ruin it now, I think, is for the ending to go awry. So many good shows end up in the scrap heap because they end badly…
So there is actually a show that Jeff likes more than Kanon. I’m amazed. What could it be? I think Jeff has already given it away in an earlier post, say, dated August 25? Unless he changed his mind about that show AGAIN?
>>This line sounds sooo wrong in so many ways….. >_>;;;
Yeah but I had to do it, The post set it up so perfectly for such a comment, but still its true, this series is amazing.
> So there is actually a show that Jeff likes more than Kanon. I’m amazed.
I’m amazed, too. Or I was. But then I remembered a show that Jeff hasn’t listed (or rather, Omoikane reminded me of the show, in the comments a few programs back).
And I’m extremely grateful to Jeff and Omoikane (and a certain maniacal Finn) for introducing me to the show.
I started as a Kanon agnostic (the supernatural elements of the show weaken it a good deal for me), but I am certainly enjoying this incarnation.
And here I was almost certain you’d be saving this for the number one spot, supposedly nominal rankings only or not :p.
I have to say I’ve really enjoyed your “Year in review” -posts - some simple but very concise reflection material that really hits the spot, that is, raising my own reflective scope towards the series in question too.
Separating the stuff into different entries over time also works to support that much better IMO, as it makes you focus on one series at the time rather than just your two top favourites of the mold.
Anyway, new year’s yet to arrive there on the other side of the big pond, but I’d like to take this time to thank you for the year gone by, and, for being the soul/mastermind behind what probably is my favourite anime blog out there. Keep up the good work! :)
In addition to that, KyoAni’s adaptation actually matches the game as best it could. This makes for the presence of at least one happy squealing otaku, here.
… wouldnt this be 2007… or am i mistaken about how this works…
anyway, this is part of the new seasons shows that i actually watch with interest… wait they are the only animes I watch (kanon and deathnote… do you watch death note?)
I have never heard of the game though… at least, not before the show.
Any show that aired at any point in 2006 was fair game, Xocnil. And, no, I’m not watching Death Note.
i love this show and i agree that sayuri should get more screentime!!!
the first version was alright but was straightforward and felt incomplete, this however felt very complete and it took me one roud to understand it, as compared to 3 rounds in the first one. plus all the girls in the remake look a lot better.
I watched the original Kanon series which came out in 2004 and I must say that this remake is considerably better. The voice acting for Yuuichi actually sounds professional, the design and general production has been given a MUCH bigger budget, and the characters are far more engaging than before (in part because of the better animation). I just wish it wasn’t so melancholic :-(.
