This shouldn’t be news to you, but Kanon and The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi share the same director. So, if the direction in Kanon at times reminds you of the direction in Haruhi, should it come as a surprise? I’m sure if you went back and rewatched Air, you’d find some “references” to Haruhi as well. In other words, it’s probably just coincidence.
And, of course, if Kyoto Animation is looking to hide some easter eggs in Kanon, wouldn’t it make more sense to reference Air (as they did in the first episode)? After all, Air and Kanon fans are pretty much one in the same. Why would Kanon fans be interested in Haruhi references?
I’ll say it again. Haruhi is Haruhi. Kanon is Kanon.
And Yuuichi is Yuuichi.

That said, there has been tons of Easter Eggs in Kanon(2006) so far. With throngs of mouth-frothing fans eyeballing every single frame, the number of possible Easter Eggs has been steadily increasing.
Some are pretty obvious, some dubious.
Cheers.
That’s basically it. I think they have every reason to stir things up especially when the story is still pretty light, intentionally or not.
Actually it’s highly unlikely that you would find ‘Haruhi references’ in Air, why? Because almost all the action takes place outside of a school in Air, which makes it kind of hard to do such references to a mostly school based show.
Also these supposed Haruhi references in Kanon always seemed to occur where the show deviates from the game, if this was purely coincidental you would think the same thing would have happened in the game and the orginal anime, don’t you think.
And lastly you would think that, but KyoAni has been known to reference their works in otherwise completely different universes. Remember episode 7 of Haruhi were Itsuki used “Fumuffo” and “Second Raid” as incantations for ESPer abilities? There you go. Is it that hard to think that KyoAni MIGHT just leave subtle in-jokes for fans to find?
Actually Kyoto Animation always sticks references to their works and to other anime in their serieses since way before Haruhi.
Remember Kazama’s SEED mode in Fumoffu? Or Kanon girls making a cameo in Air? Then there was Yukito’s doll in TSR. In other words they love to stick random easter eggs in their shows, which is why I am totally not surprised with the random Haruhi references. In fact I am almost 100% sure either Haruhi or Misuzu will have a cameo in this series sooner or later.
Yuichi’s pure Kyon statement of fact with Kaori asking him what the hell he is doing narrating made me chuckle >_
I can’t recall how those scenes played out in the game, so whether they’re deviations or not, I can’t say. They do seem familiar, at least. The question is, in every show KyoAni does from here on out that includes a “transfer student introduction” scene (which are pretty common in anime), will it automatically be hailed as a Haruhi reference? I mean, as obvious as the reference in that scene is supposed to be, the possibility didn’t even occur to me the first time I watched it.
As for KyoAni being reference-happy, is that really true? The only references I recall from Haruhi were the FMP ones - which were isolated to a single scene in a single episode. I don’t recall anything from Air, with the exception of the Kanon girls showing up briefly (which is kind of weird, when you think about it). And beyond that… well, KyoAni has only worked on a few shows, so it’s not like there’s much to reference in the first place. One or two instances does not a trend make.
I won’t argue with the idea that KyoAni may throw a Haruhi reference or two into Kanon, but I wouldn’t expect those references to be as involved as the apparent references in Episode 2. Given how closely KyoAni is following the game thus far, and given how unforgiving Kanon fans would be should they screw around with things too much, I can’t see them altering scenes and dialogue to that extent just to make a joke. And if I’m wrong… well, it’ll be disappointing, because they’re doing everything right otherwise.
Oh, and as for the Air comment… I was talking about stylistic choices on the part of the Director. Ishihara Tatsuya has a unique way of framing shots, and it shows in Air, Haruhi, and now Kanon. Read around, and you’ll find that some of the support for the “references” in Episode 2 in Kanon hinges on the way certain shots are framed (apparently, Kaori is serving as a stand-in for Haruhi or something).
Misuzu is already in Kanon(2006), sorta. ^^;
The VA for Sayuri in Kanon, is also the VA for Misuzu in Air. Soooo… we’re just waiting for Sayuri to say, “Gao.” and the circle will be complete. :D
Cheers.
If you are restricting references to only internal ones( meaning series made by KyoAni), then no, there’s not many, but if you mean references in general, then yes, there’s a lot.
So I guess Jeff’s also disgruntled with the numerous people equating Kanon to Haruhi.
Well, being one of those people, I must say I’m purely doing it out of fun and enjoyment for myself.
I guess now that KyoAni has a number of works to their name, they can’t resist putting in references too. Even if Haruhi had a small number of meta-references, there’s a lot of general references that can be found in it too.
I kinda felt that there references to Haruhi in Ep.02 was done quite appropriately for me. It didn’t felt like KyoAni went out of their way to do it, and the dialogue is quite normal for the circumstances. For those not in the know, it won’t feel out of place, but for those who do, it gives them something to laugh to :).
D:
NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
*chucks a bottle of Akiko’s jam and ninjas outta here.
Heh… I caught the Haruhi references…would Mai’s “zen-zen” be a Haruhi reference… I don’t recall her saying it in the First one
Yep the best sign of a good reference joke is that some people don’t realize it for what it is, and then complain about the people who do see it for what it is, as if this sorta thing is really all that worth complaining about….
IMO KyoAni are using these references to get people’s minds off of how “dull” the beginning episodes seem to be and onto focusing their attention to finding hidden clues, so that they would also notice the possible foreshadowing of what’s to come.
Really, the only “nod” to Haruhi that caught my attention was Kaori catching Yuuichi “narrating” in the hallway. Unless that’s Kanon-ical (sorry, I could not resist!) I’m calling that a solid Haruhi reference. Dude, he was totally Kyon-ing there.
As long as they don’t make a habit of it, I’ll be okay. I’m of the “go on, get the joke out of the way, now move along like a good story” school of thought on that sort of thing. We get it, it was funny, now stop taking us out of the story and get on with it.
Without digging too deeply into ‘easter egg or not’ thing, I thought the introduction thing, unless it is in Kanon game (haven’t played), was pretty obvious and direct reference to Haruhi. As SS-Eclipse translated it, “If there are any introductions that aren’t normal, I’d like to see them.” To me that sounds like a direct dig at Haruhi’s self-introduction (aliens/espers/sliders step forth etc) that Kyon/Yuuichi witnesses.
The narration joke sounded more like a jab at main characters’ tendency to self-narrate in visual novels.
