I apologize for the downtime. I’ve been pretty unhappy with Dreamhost for awhile now, but migrating to a new host is about as much fun as getting a root canal. I don’t know if I can put it off for much longer, however.
Still, I’ll have to at least put it off for another week, as I’ll be traveling starting tomorrow. I’ll be back late next week. In the mean time, enjoy the new anime season. The only shows I’ve had time to watch are Kanon and Asatte no Houkou, so I’ll have a lot on my plate when I return.

Can you elaborate on your problems with Dreamhost?
I’ve been a user for almost a year now, but my site gets near-zero traffic, so I don’t have any potential for problems.
I’ve been with DH for six years, and while I’ve been satisfied with the service for most of that time, the past year or so has been painful. Basically, they have some recurring network issues that lead to excessive downtime (it’s been a daily occurrence lately), their datacenter is unusually susceptible to power outages, they oversell, and they’re unprofessional in their communications.
My patience with them has just about run out.
Hah! I knew you would be watching Asatte no Houkou. Unless Hataraki Man proves to be better, that series will be the anime of the season for my wife and I.
Ah, so it’s been happening to you as well. I’ve been wondering if there are other ‘Happy’ Nightmare host customers. Speaking of moving to other webhost, have you heard of ANHosting, Jeff? Are they any good? I took a look at their offering and I’m tempted because they have Fantastico.
I don’t know much about ANHosting other than that a lot of people use them. I’ve been looking at MediaTemple (as a 9rules member, I get a discount), but they don’t have Fantastico. I’d prefer to have Fantastico, so perhaps I’ll take a look at ANHosting as well.
Either way, I’m not looking forward to migrating. Ugh.
While I’m not around often enough to notice the downtime (I know it has happened, but I never seem to be around to feel the worst of it), I doubt I’ll be changing hosts anytime soon. It helps that I’m one of the people that got in on their crazy birthday sale three years back… I have a better chance of finding a snowman in hell than I have of finding an equivalent account at another webhost.
Still, they do seem to be improving, and with all the backend work they’ve been doing the past few months, the next few months will hopefully be much less rocky.
(Man, the days that I was actually worried about running out of bandwidth seem so far away… I could easily host 50 more Nanaca Crashes when I couldn’t even support one of them back when it first went around…)
Yeah, I remember having to watch my bandwidth, too. Now, it’s not even an issue.
Wontaek… expect an Asatte no Houkou post as soon as I’m back. Given its sleeper status and the fact I already love it to death, I’ll probably be promoting the hell out of it.
So where is that picture from? And do you have a large-format version?
Hosting Matters seems to be the one that everyone likes. I’ve seen their support in action a couple of times, and I was impressed.
Hang on, I just looked at DreamHosts’s plans. WTF?! 200GB of disk and 2TB of bandwidth for $9.95 per month?
I wonder just what their oversell factor is. I pay about $200 each for my servers, and they only come with 2TB of bandwidth.
Dreamhost may have occasional issues, but I’ve been fairly happy with them. For the price, it’s hard to complain. Unless you’re paying some serious cash for a private server, I wouldn’t expect much better.
Jeff if you need any help with migration, I’m sure you can ask for assistance in the network forums. Those guys know a lot of stuff about wordpress and might be able to help you with your database.
I purchased a Media Temple plan because they were by far the easiest. (Good tech support… we have some 9rules members who swear by them.) I think they’re upgrading their control panel system pretty soon. I haven’t had any stability problems with Media Temple but then again I probably don’t use that much bandwidth yet.
I think if you have two hardly visited websites lined up side by side, I don’t think you could tell the difference. I think that once a site starts becoming “useful” Dreamhost falls short while Media Temple does not.
One other thing Jeff, if you partner with Media Temple (aka badge link to them) and refer enough customers to them, along side the whole 9rules member thing, I believe that you can get free hosting for life. We have a couple of members on that plan so it’s worth considering.
Wonderduck, the characters are from To Heart. The original isn’t much larger (that, and the version I have contains a lot of compression artifacts), but here you go.
Thanky!
