Revisiting Canvas
September 28, 2006 | Television | Canvas
I’ve been wanting to rewatch Canvas 2 for awhile now - even despite the fact it only wrapped up this past March. Rarely do I watch a show twice within the same year. But, for some inexplicable reason, I couldn’t get Canvas off my mind, and given the show’s Autumn motif, things just got worse once the leaves started changing.
So, I sat down last night to watch the first few episodes… and came up for air four hours later.
It’s actually been an interesting experience thus far. For example, given what I learned from the ending, I find I’m much more sympathetic toward Elis this time around. I can’t dismiss her as I did before. I’m also surprised by how effectively the show telegraphs future plot developments in the first episode. It’s staggering how many little details and plot cues I missed the first time around. I’m having my, “hand, meet forehead,” moment all over again.
I still think Hiroki should have ditched Elis at the airport and ran off with Kana, though. Perhaps that possibility will be covered in Canvas 3: Mayoi no Generation. Beware of the BAD END… I hear Kana succumbs to alcoholism and blows her brains out.

Somehow the tragic multi-cide that’s making waves in the category of serious bishoujo gaming is not always a good thing. Sure, it’s fine in School Days, but… I suppose artists and short lives are at least historically correlated.
GJ with the parody, btw.
Man… now I’m peaked to rewatch Canvas2 too…
That Haruhi parody is gold.
Lol I bought a Kana figurine. Cos she was on sale. But you can remove both her top and skirt to leave her in undies!
>>> I still think Hiroki should have ditched Elis at the airport and ran off with Kana, though.
I still think the blue angel picture only means he can paint again, Elis outgrowth childish infatuation with Onee-San, and Hiroki coming back to Kiri to comfort her in the falling snow would have made much stronger and moving ending. I believe there was a way for Hiroki to get 2 girl Harem in the game, though.
>>> Sure, it’s fine in School Days, but…
That long, straight hair girl is scary and the male character should have been hung, drawn, and quartered.
You forgot to tell us how many days until Kanon
>> I still think Hiroki should have ditched Elis at the airport and ran off with Kana, though
I’d prefer one that Hiroki donates his heart to Tomoko and Tomoko wakes up to live yuri-fille… I mean fun-filled days with Elise.
Goth sleep-wear FTW.
>> Gothloli sleep-wear FTW.
You can say that again
Why say it, when you can show it? :D
Tomoko!
Cheers.
Haha. Awesome pic. Very moe. I like.
Its one of those pics that reminds yourself why you love anime. :D
I rarely have time to rewatch any series. If I did, I doubt Canvas 2 would be at the top of the list. But as for the first time through watching, it was a great experiance.
I am glad I just didnt dismiss Canvas 2 as another bishojo game series, even if that is pretty much what it is. Lol. But the ending is something differnt and can catch one off gaurd.
But still, great series, if your a fan of the genre.
I still have Plastic Smile and na na na iro on a heavy rotation on my j-music/anime playlist.
You know, I only now noticed Tomoko was voiced by Takahashi Mikako (even though it’s pretty obvious). That makes her ten times cooler.
I also didn’t realize that Misaki was voiced by Hirano Aya. I wonder if she also did the Ava Maria parts? Sure sounds like it…
Well, that caught me by surprise. I did not know Hirano Aya voiced Misaki Sumire, and even after knowing about it, I still had a hard time associating the voice with SHaruhi. The closest comparison I can think of is when SHaruhi is all shy and stuff during Ep12 of SHnY.
The difference in personality is just too striking. Unlike “Me Yuuichi, Not Kyon” from Kanon 2006.
Steering back on-topic, upon rewatching Canvas2( I’m up to Ep18 at this point), I came to realise that they foreshadowed a lot. Like how Sumire appeared in Ep01( walked past Elis and Hiroki), or how Tomoko appeared in Ep02( she was the little girl during the hospital flashback scene( and it makes sense too… due to her condition)).
Sumire’s singing was also used as BGM during the first three episodes, when Hiroki was sitting at his bench, which led to his comment in Ep04 on how he has heard her voice before. After Sumire’s problem was resolved in Ep04, her singing was never used as a BGM again during those bench scenes.
All these and more. It was simply amazing to revisit the series again and witness the amount of detail put into it. To echo an earlier entry from Jeff Lawson, I could feel the love invested into this series.
Bravo, Canvas2. Bravo.
Skane, I noticed all of those things as well. Tomoko’s appearance in the flashback really surprised me.
Where did you get that canvas2_haruhi pix — Especially the original pix for the top two pix? It’s funny…
Just finished watching this anime just now… so figured it was safe to start checking out the ‘debriefing’ on this blog… (did the same for KimiNozo earlier)
Overall I was totally caught by surprise by the ending… I don’t have any objection to Elis and Hiroki being together… but can’t help feeling sorry for Kiri the perennial ‘loser’… When one watches this kind of anime, one can’t help feeling for the inevitable ‘loser’… (just as in KimiNozo)… UNLESS… one day, an anime is made… …to have the eroge ‘bad’ ending (where the guy doesn’t end up with anyone) XD
