Suzumiya Haruhi is out to conquer the world, it seems. For the online version of the article, see here.
There’s no shortage of goofy anime parody videos available on YouTube, that’s for sure.

It’s Newsweek International Edition, by the way. I almost made the mistake.
I wonder what those big corporations will do when they discover they have to sue something like million people, who probably don’t have much money to pay any punitive fines, all with the attitude of come and get me. What if those million people form some kind of band of brotherhood to give monetary support to whomever that was unlucky enough to be caught and sent to court? Yes, this is probably a dream, but somehow, someone who knows beter in those big corporations may be having nightmares about this.
Despite it being in the international edition, it’s still a jolt to the brain seeing Haruhi, mentioned by picture and name, in a mainstream news magazine. Maybe she really can control the world…
The Internet is a massive copyright infringement machine. People shouldn’t be worried that they may be sued–we control culture, and also the law (ideally speaking), so we should be safe. Some people realized this in the 90s, but most people didn’t care back then.
This is all just the birth pain of a new era, ushering in the true meaning of an informational revolution in the life of every man, woman and child. At least every one of them that has broadband.
But in the mean while, some people will have to take one for the team. This goes both ways–some companies will die, others will lose lots of $, and some everyday people will have to pay out to a settlement.
By the way, a commenter on Jason’s blog has suggested the scan of the magazine page is actually a fake. He didn’t provide visual evidence, however. Obviously, if it is indeed a fake, I’d like to add a correction to the post. I’d like to see if for myself beforehand, however.
The commenter said the original could be found at 4ch, but I didn’t have much luck finding it (mind you, I can only poke around 4ch for so long before my brain turns to mush). Assuming it was faked, does anyone have a copy of the original? Or am I going to have to go looking for a copy of Newsweek International tomorrow?
I’ve seen it around on 2ch and so as well, and while you get lots of fakes there as well, I think this one’s real… Are people really that bored to edit the image to include Haruhi? The picture, alright… but the text? It fits in too well. Although ‘national phenomenon’…. well, it’s still quite a bit away from the impact Evangelion had, methinks.
