Probably because right now it could cost a buttload of money to license the show! Kadokawa said during their panel that 60,000 copies of DVD volume 1 have been sold so far in Japan. That number paired with how the show took pretty much everyone by surprise when it debuted gives the company much leverage going into meetings with US licensors. Someone WILL license it but I don’t think it’ll be announced before the end of this year.

Why, were we expecting it to be? I’m not the least bit surprised. Perhaps next year, but I wouldn’t count on that either. Like Calaggie said, probably too much money, and I would like to add, too much of a risk. Sure the fans will buy the show (well the good ones anyway), and maybe some casual anime fans will pick it up but I don’t know if they (meaning whoever licenses the show) would get their money back on it.

But then again Utawarerumuno just got licensed by ADV and I wasn’t expecting that, especially so soon. So I guess one never really can tell these days what will and won’t be licensed.

Maybe the reason why It hasn’t been licensed yet is because they’ve looked beyond the fanboyism and actually realized the show is quite mediocre.

I wouldn’t pay for episode shuffle BS.

It’s gonna be licensed eventually, but since it really doesn’t have the crossover appeal that it seems that people want to think that it has, man oh man is its licensor going to try to financially rape the fanboys.

Nothin’ says crossover appeal like Ainu Doggirls From A Porn Game. Or Pani Poni Dash. Or…

I do love how fanboys and haters both treat Haruhi as if it were from some heretofore unknown plane of quality instead of evaluating it on a level playing field with its peers.

Why, were we expecting it to be?

Yesterday morning, it was rumored that ADV would be announcing the license for Haruhi during its afternoon panel at Otakon. The rumor proved false, but as of last night, it was still being posted on blogs and discussion forums as if true.

I think this is to be expected.

I doubt Haruhi would sell in America. It was a fun show while It lasted, doubt I’ll ever watch it again, but lets be honest. The only thing the show ever really had going for it was Kyoto animation and Mikuru.

If you think that’s the case then you seriously underestimate the US market for anime.

Given a brief survey of Otakon, I think Suzumiya Haruhi will probably sell just as well as more unconventional titles like Azumanga Daioh.

And wth is with that licensing crap rumor? Boo Hiss. I even heard it in the almost-internet-less bubble of Baltimore.

If done right, Suzumiya Haruhi novels might sell well to many sci-fi or fantasy readers in USA. A important tactic to use when selling novels is to actually distance itself from the anime in order to not turn off some readers: Anime fan will find it without trouble even if the cover of the book doesn’t mention anything about the anime. Once it sells nicely, then the dvd might sell as well. That is what happened with Legend of Galactic Heroes in Korea, to the point that even the TV series, the whole 100 episodes, got dubbed in Korea. In my opinion, the book is good enough to hold its own in sci-fi market, and if the distributors are smart, they should exploit this before trying to push the dvds to the people.

The Haruhi rumors started at Otakon, I believe, because someone put some very professional-looking posters up around the convention bulletin boards advertising Haruhi. They had stickers on them that said “Come check out our new titles!” and gave the time and location of the ADV Premieres panel. They didn’t explicitly say that ADV had licensed Haruhi.

I have a few pictures of these posters, which had disappeared by Saturday. Guess someone was just playing a prank on ADV and all of us congoers.

What I heard was all about Kadokawa Shoten doing something like what Koei is doing.

    Correction: Toei.
