Hachi no Kechi

There’s a scene in Episode 11 of Nana where Hachi is walking around Mizukoshi-san’s store, carrying this phallic kryptonite glass knick-knack thingamajig, fretting over her financial situation. You’re just waiting for her to drop the thing, given her clumsy nature and all - not to mention the fact it would make for great comedy, what with her being down to her last 2,000 yen and Junko’s bag of pity rice. “You break it, you buy it.” Anyway, Mizukoshi-san walks up and surprises her with an offer of dinner (and in Hachi’s mind, something more, I reckon). As expected, Hachi throws her arms up and squeals “Yatta!,” and you’re thinking “Ah, here it is… here’s the gag…”

And, sure enough, in the next shot, there stands Hachi, sans phallic kyrptonite glass knick-knack thingamajig, except…

That’s all. It just vanishes. No gag.

Weird.

I remember wondering about that too, now that you mention it. Cut for time, maybe?

Heh. I noticed that too. i was in fact looking forward to the somewhat predictable joke, but alas they obviously forgot, or it was a joke in itself, therefore making it unpredictable instead. Whatever, it was amusing anyway.

How do you put it? When it comes to comedy, there are different levels of humorous appeal. Jokes involving JAM IT IN and your mother’s VAGOOO is, for example, one of the lowest, fundamental class. Jokes about punting Keitaro is probably the next step up. Jokes that appeals to real life is another step up the complexity level. Jokes about creative what-ifs and Haruhi/Kyon God Theories is even one more up the humor-abstraction latter.

Nana is, like a lot of sit-coms or stand-up routines normal people watch, goes to the semi-real-lifelike level. Much of anime that we watch do not speak that language.

And poor spelling/puns/wordplay is in a category all alone by itself.

Launched into orbit, perhaps. Or maybe it’s stuck in the ceiling. Double-be-damned, but I didn’t notice it disappear… oh well.
