Watashi FANSHII RARA

My live karaoke experience is mostly limited to one night in Tokyo with a pack of drunken coworkers and the company president - which is a shame, because it’s really a lot of fun. And while I’m not so much an otaku to have gone straight for the anime tunes (although, a couple of guys from marketing took a stab at the Attack No. 1 OP theme… with hilarious results), I at least found time for “Alone Again, Naturally”. I’m a Maison Ikkoku fanboy, yup.

And, yes, there are pictures, and, no, not in a million years.

Still, it’s funny that Omo brings up this particular topic, as just a few days ago, I was doing some housecleaning and stumbled upon this.

Oh dear. So many potential things to say here. But I’ll keep it nice and just say that you’re a braver man than I.

Hear, hear! to courageous souls out to conquer the unknown. ;p

I love karaoke. It’s practically a must in any party thrown by my family and relatives, being drunk is optional. Heck, I even own a Magic Sing.

Karaoke is good for the soul. I have this whole pseudo-canon-Christian spiel ready but I’ll spare you from the craziness. But go pimp OMGSONG! Share! Laugh! It’s all good!

  4. 4 Tristan

Haha, that’s the most fantabulistic duet I’ve ever heard. Seriously.

    Bravo.

  5. 5 Skane

    Heh, just one compliment.

You sounded Asian in that duet. If I never knew about your origins, I would have never guessed that you were an American from that duet.

Oh, I remember that one! You posted that one on “Nowhere Anime” when it was still up. That was when I discovered you were a good singer. You should release your own single.

I can see it now: The Jeff Lawson Brand. Motto: “If you’re not deaf, listen to Jeff” (^_^)

Great stuff! It makes me feel like recording a sing-along of Midnight Blue . . . maybe not such a good idea.

  8. 8 wontaek

Did you really sung that?! That was almost production level recording with no noise from anyone nearby? I must compliment both the female singer and male singer for being steady with the voice quality, dynamic, and diction. How can we be sure that you are not pulling our legs?

Most of my close friends work in the music industry, and I’ve done some production work here and there over the years. I have a lot of tools at my disposal.

Otherwise, yeah, I suppose I’m a decent singer. I have a musical background that I don’t talk about all that often.

So you are still sort of pulling our legs…?

  11. 11 Jeff Lawson

    How so?

  12. 12 omo

karaoke isn’t suppose to be done with pro equipments!

  13. 13 Jeff Lawson

Well, the true karaoke purist would argue that it’s not karaoke unless it’s completely live and in front of an audience.

If I’m going to produce a creative work, I’m going to use all available tools. And, besides, I recorded the thing with a cheap, $5 PC mic. Nothing professional about that.

  14. 14 wontaek

$5 PC mic?! Either there has been a new breakthrough in audio recording technology or you found a place where they were firesaling the mikes at something like 90% discount. Or, the Lafayette Chamber Singers should ask you to come here and record our performances. Since we sing lots of complex polyphonic stuffs, we need to achieve the highest clarity we can in our recording in order for all the different texts and notes to be heard in the recording.

  15. 15 omo

Hi Jal, I am kind of a karaoke purist :p

And yes, it has to be live–as in it’s not a studio recording sense.

Cheap $5 PC mic only sounds terrible live (as in real-time), but you can make it sound ok just by EQing it. I’ve heard real poorly recorded karaoke and it has more to do with the know-how than the equipment.

Best. Duet. Ev4r. That put a smile on my face.

A brave man is you. How could you deny us pictures when you’ve already dished out the most embarrassing piece of 歌を歌う evidence? Come on…

  17. 17 Tristan

As I was giving a first ear to NHK’s OST (by the Pearl Brothers), I found myself thinking that the singer’s voice was somehow familiar.

After a few minutes of mindstorming, I’ve started browsing through Hop Step Jump!’s archives and eventually found that old post with its mp3 attached.

Well, the likeness may not be obvious, but it striked in the first place.

PS : This soundtrack is sweet.
