I probably shouldn’t have watched the first episode of School Rumble S2 and the first (or is it?) episode of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu one after the other. Ah, the melancholy of a sprained diaphragm.
Sukuran was more of the same… but with more budget? Perhaps. The OP was kind of so-so, but I dug the ED. Needs more Eri, though.
But Haruhi? Oh boy. If you haven’t found the time to watch this yet, you really should. I can’t wait to see this cast of mental cases in action in future episodes. And I want more dancing!
What else? Hmm… well, I can’t think of a transition, so here’s a shot of the sky…

“Shot of the sky” indeed! ROFL
Kyoto Animation has been on a roll recently, putting out some great shows. I wonder what the rest of the show will be like, though. Often times, you can tell the mood of a show by the colour palette they use. It looks like it’s going to be a bright, date-sim/cheap OAV palette, so I don’t know what that will say. I hope the writing will be good. Please…..
Anyway, the student film character designs remind me of Air, so I am already a raving fanboy of this show.
Jeff approved label for Haruhi. That’s it! I am going to give it a try.
Just seen it. I am going to wait 2 more episode before passing any judgement.
The first episode of Haruhi was one of the most absolutely hilarious and brilliant things I’ve seen in AGES.
And I totally fell for Haruhi herself the moment she stood up and turned around. She looks to be gloriously crazy.
Sky bukkake!
I think if you maintain a satire of badness for too long it just becomes an exercise in irritation. I would have enjoyed the “movie” more if they had slightly less self-conscious acknowledgement of its many and varied flaws.
Still, I will concede the potential of the show.
I’ll concede that the movie was a bit tedious at first… it’s almost as if it was played straight enough as to not give everything away immediately. But, from the commercial break on, it was non-stop funny. I wasn’t just laughing, I was LAUGHING. Something clicked.
Of course, with the first episode being such an odd diversion, it’ll take another episode or two to get an honest feel for the show. The first episode did more than enough to pique my curiosity, though… in that sense, it was clearly a success.
I’m in two minds as to whether you tell (/warn) people about the student film, or you just wait for their eyes to roll back into their heads and the foam to issue from their mouths. I’m surprised how many people don’t “get” it and think it’s the actual show.
… although the framing on the movie was marginally better than that in Girls’ High.
Never underestimate stupidity and cunningness of people.
I think that “get/don’t get” divide is one of the great things about this episode. It’s not so easy to present yourself in such a clear perceptive divide. Perception generally is a flubby thing that vary from person to person…so it could be just me, but it’s a smart, daring, and successful attempt. Given the general response to the show has been very positive, most people got it and enough people didn’t.
I don’t think the issue is whether or not people “get” the idea that it is an indy student film, but rather if you are annoyed at seeing yet another parody of it. My guess is if you are some arthouse snob who has seen lots of bad and independent movies, then you will realize right away that it is a parody, and immediately build up a list of cliches, and check them off as the show goes on. Then you are pretty sure to dislike the show. It’s kind of like when I go, “Oh boy, another shounen action show…. and here’s the mecha…”
Fortunately, I was able to enjoy the show and LOL at most of the scenes, so it’s all good.
Saw Haruhi Ep 2 ( 1 ). Verdict: I am showing this to my wife.
She likes it! She likes it!
I have noticed that this series uses much more variety of colors as well as more frames per second, judging from the dancing scenes. The characters are constantly moving and the majority of scenes have their facial expression in it as well. This must mean that they spent more money compared to most of other anime TV series. Heck! The file size for this series is usually twice as big compared to School Rumble or Fate/ SN.
