Seiyuu Hunting

I’ve never been particularly concerned with a seiyuu’s physical appearance, either. After all, looks aren’t exactly relevant to the sort of work seiyuu (typically) do. Voice acting is voice acting. Modeling is modeling.

Then again, I’m not exactly a seiyuu fan. That is, while I could go on and on about a favorite seiyuu’s acting roles and musical output, I really couldn’t tell you much more. I won’t know her birthday, blood type, favorite color, or what she named her pet cactus. I don’t want to go so far as to label such fanaticism creepy, but it’s clearly not my thing.

I suppose I appreciate certain seiyuu in the same way I appreciate certain directors, composers, and musical artists in the industry. I enjoy their work, and that’s about it. I don’t see much point in getting wrapped up in the personal lives of people I’ll likely never meet. And I don’t count “pointing video camera up skirt at promotional event” as “meeting.”

That said, if Shimizu Ai is looking for someone to clean her apartment, I’m available.

Once Upon a Time

I notice Google has updated their satellite imagery for Tokyo, finally adding high resolution data for my old neighborhood. Behold, my tiny six-mat room. Actually, in that view, Google seems to think I lived in the large apartment building across the street. The corresponding map view gets it right, however.

As you can see, I was lucky enough to live a short distance away from the train station. Unfortunately, even though my office was nearby, it was on a completely different train line, necessitating a slow bus trip every morning and afternoon.

And, no, I never figured out the purpose of this big chunk of farmland to the northwest. It was a nice spot for an evening stroll, at least.

Winter Season Watchlist

The winter anime season is well underway. Like most years, there are few blockbuster shows to be found. Thankfully, I’m not a blockbuster kinda guy. No, more often than not, my favorite shows are the “diamonds in the rough,” of which the winter season always seems to provide plenty. Here are the diamonds (and a lump of coal or two) that have caught my eye this winter…

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
Good things come in small packages, it seems. A mere six episodes in length, Hantsuki will be over before I know it. Still, I’m inclined to love every minute. As much as I like bittersweet endings, I’m actually hoping for a happy ending this time around. Rika’s too cute to die.

Kashimashi ~ Girl Meets Girl ~
I know this show is pandering to the first degree, but I don’t care. It’s still hilarious. The drama is pretty generic in presentation, but the absurdity of the setup more than makes up for it. It helps that the show hit the seiyuu jackpot: Tamura Yukari, Horie Yui, Ueda Kana, and Asano Masumi, all together? Not since Ichigo Mashimaro have I felt so lucky to be alive.

Kage Kara Mamoru
It’s great to see a show tackling the serious issue of mental retardation, so often ignored in modern Japanese media… oh, wait… you mean Yuna’s not… oh, geez, my bad. Well, there’s ninjas, at least.

REC
Salaryman meets ridiculously cute voice actress. Cute voice actress’ apartment burns down. Salaryman provides cute voice actress place to stay. By the end of the first episode, they’re doing the horizontal tango. I should’ve stayed in Tokyo.

Binchou-tan
I’m kind of surprised it took so long for this show to be made. Perhaps the production team spent all this time raising funds, as the budget for the show looks to be “giant bag of yen X ?.”

Yomigaeru Sora ~ Rescue Wings ~
Mature slice of life. My favorite kind of show. Some might find Rescue Wings dull in its realism, but it’s that very realism I find riveting. It’s like a straight-laced Patlabor, minus the giant robots. It helps that the show is set on the Sea of Japan coast; outside of Hokkaido, it’s my favorite part of the country.

Fate/stay night
I already dumped on Fate/stay night here. Chances are, had the show premiered in any other season, I wouldn’t bother with it. But, you take what you can get this time of year.

Even More Wonderful!

You didn’t think I’d pass up a chance to play with the new Mai-Otome OP, did you? Make space, guys, because I’m jumping on the bandwagon.

I could do this all day, you know.

No Anime Blog, No Life

Girls Gone Wild: Stellvia Edition

Looks like the secret is out.

When I laid Nowhere Anime Blog to rest, it was my intent all along to eventually return in some shape or fashion. My original plan was to wait a little while longer before launching, as I’m currently in the midst of a move to Colorado. At the last moment, however, my departure was delayed a few weeks, providing the perfect opportunity to get the site up and running a bit earlier than expected. So, here I am.

Obviously, I won’t be blogging individual anime episodes any longer. In fact, I’m not entirely sure yet what I’ll be blogging about. I should say, however, that this is very much my personal playground… a place where I can geek out about anime all I want, speak my mind, and, for all basic purposes, be a fan. My only goal, really, is to have fun doing whatever it is I end up doing. Hopefully, you can share in that fun as well.

Oh, and since I never had the opportunity to say it during my absence: Honoka should’ve totally beat the shit out of Suzuka.
